Podcasts to escape with: Best Friends with Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata

Having good friends around you makes life more bearable and Earwolf’s Best Friends, hosted by best friends and comedians Nicole Byer and Sasheer Zamata, is a pure example of this.

As listeners of Best Friends, you get to be a fly on the wall listening to their free-flowing conversations filled with bits that could be used on the stand-up stage. The two friends start off by catching each other up on their day, which is quite funny since the two women see each other all the time. In one episode Nicole tells Sasheer that she missed her, and Sasheer replies saying that the two just saw each other. Nicole and Sasheer also involve their producer Kimmy Lucas and audio engineer Jordan Duffy. A fun thing that happened in an episode was when Sasheer and Nicole asked women who passed their studio how they wear their bras  They were inspired to do this when Nicole and Sasheer found out they wear their bras differently, Nicole was the odd one out. Random topics like this pop up on the podcast all the time.

Listeners can also write to or call the podcast to ask for advice on their friendships. Nicole and Sasheer give thoughtful advice and answers based on the opinion that people can have great friendships like the hosts. A special episode the girls have now and then is the Very Good Friends episodes. They invite their favorite best friends to tell their story on how they became best friends. How it works is that the hosts take one guest at a time to talk about their best friend. Once each interview is done, the hosts get the best friends together and they reveal their answers to each other to see if they got the same answer. Some of their best friends’ guests include Gabrielle Union and Larry Sims, and  Levar Burton and his wife. Very Good Friends reveals how we sometimes can’t comprehend how much we mean to somebody and it is great to be reminded.

Sometimes the girls take a BuzzFeed quiz. Some examples of the  crazy quizzes they take  are “Want to know your inner color ? Choose your favorite cottage to find out!” or “Date or Dump these Disney Men to Reveal Your Type.”

Nicole and Sasheer have their own comedic successes. Nicole Byer has other podcasts, like Why Won’t You Date Me? and Newcomers , and is known for being the host on Nailed It!  Sasheer Zamata is a former cast member on SNL and has been in several movies and series like  The Weekend and Woke.  Nicole and Sasheer have also starred in a web series together called Pursuit of Sexiness and they use to be in an improv group together called Doppelganger.  Zamata and Byer are professionals at creating laughter and joy.
