WandaVision: Will this Disney+ series get a season 2?
WandaVision has taken viewers through every decade of sitcoms, telling a story of grief and love in the process — and the show took its final bow yesterday with its aptly named episode, “The Series Finale.” From that alone, fans might have guessed that the Disney+ series won’t be returning for a second season. But WandaVision‘s director, Matt Shakman, seems to have confirmed it.
Speaking with Collider, Shakman was asked upfront if there were any plans to bring these characters back for another round of episodes on Disney+.
“We have no plans for WandaVision season 2 at all,” Shakman responded.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t see Wanda or White Vision again. In fact, Elizabeth Olsen is already working on Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, and the introduction of a new Vision — added to our Vision’s final sentiment before he disappears for good — just about confirms the AI’s story arc isn’t over yet. Wanda and White Vision will likely play a big role in the future of the MCU. It just won’t be in WandaVision.
Why one season of WandaVision makes sense
As much as Marvel fans would love to spend more time with Wanda and Vision, it does make sense that this chapter of their story is over. Now that Wanda has begun healing (sort of) and Vision as we know him is gone, it’s time to tell stories outside of Westview. That means no more sitcoms, no more mind games — no more of the things that made WandaVision so unique.
That’s not to say fans won’t see other stories with Vision or Wanda front and center in the future. But whether it’s another show, a movie or something else entirely, it won’t be WandaVision. And if we do get to that point, the pair will probably first make appearances in other characters’ stories. The MCU isn’t known to focus on one hero for two long, and the franchise has a lot planned for the next few years.
Of course, with so much planned, that means things are subject to change — and Shakman didn’t write off the idea of a second season entirely.
“That could change, of course,” he said. “It all depends on what’s the story. We were very focused on telling this story over nine episodes and hopefully coming to a conclusion that feels satisfying and also surprising.”
The conclusion definitely felt like a conclusion, even if some of the later developments — and credits scenes — set up future stories in the MCU.
Fortunately, one of those stories does involve Wanda, and fans will only need to wait a year before diving into Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness — a film that’s sure to be every bit as bizarre as WandaVision. The film is currently slated to hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
