In episode 6 of 9-1-1: Lone Star, Owen Strand did something we never thought he would: He showed himself to be self-absorbed and bad as a listener. When it comes to being the leader of the 126 firehouse in Austin, Texas, Owen has been great as a man bringing together a diverse group of individuals. He listens and he is empathetic.

However, all of that went out the door in “Everyone and Their Brother.” Not once, but twice, Owen completely overlooked his own son and his feelings. And it all revolved around a baby.

Since T.K. learned that his dad had cancer, he has been there to help him and offer his support. He was leading the way when it came to celebrating his father’s good news with the rest of the firehouse, and he implored his father to do everything the doctors recommended.

And yet, in a moment that was truly careless, Owen told his own son that the reason he was going to be doing a recommended procedure that T.K. had been pushing him to do was because he “is going to be a father.”

9-1-1: Lone Star needs to redeem Owen Strand in episode 7

And maybe it is just me, but my first thought was “WTH!” You already are a father. Just because your son is an adult now, that doesn’t make you any less of a father. And to also make it clear that your adult son’s feelings and thoughts mean less to you than that of a baby that hasn’t even been born yet? Not cool.

Over the course of the first season and at the very start of season 2, 9-1-1: Lone Star has shown Owen to be a loving dad who would do anything for his son. And yet as soon as a new baby is on the horizon, it was like he tossed all of that aside.

In episode 7, “Displaced,” we need to see Owen making amends for his carelessness. Words hurt. Being pushed aside for what amounts to the newest model of child is even worse. And Owen needs to realize what he said and didn’t say. He needs to fix the hurt left behind by his own self-absorbed actions.

Hopefully 9-1-1: Lone Star doesn’t try to brush aside what Owen did to T.K. and these two have a real heart to heart. After all, we have seen T.K. growing up and being more mature in his actions and his relationships, but how can we expect better of T.K. if we aren’t expecting better from Owen as well?
