In the second episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star season 2, we got emotion, lava, and the perfect set up for the upcoming crossover event.

First, we have to talk about that death. Was it a major character? Technically, no. But that doesn’t mean that the emotional impact is lacking. In fact, while you can argue that the entire lava plot was ridiculous, after everything we saw and experienced in 2020, unexpected volcanic eruptions are no longer out of the ballpark of reality. So having a member of the 126 dying because of lava and lava rocks made sense.

It was a tragic moment that gave us some beautiful scenes at the end of the episode. But it also opened the door perfectly for the 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star crossover event.

While the lava has nothing to do with the wildfire that we saw at the very end of the episode, and which will be the impetus for our crossover, it almost felt like a natural progression of the story. And we don’t really know if the lava is completely separate from the wildfires. Either way, the story makes sense.

9-1-1: Lone Star teases us with the scene that will kickstart our crossover event

In the final moments of 9-1-1: Lone Star episode 2, we watched as a teen boy is alone in the woods trying to start a small campfire. And if you are anything like me, your first thought was “oh no, this is how things go wrong.” However, it doesn’t take long to realize that there is something much bigger happening.

In the background, an odd noise steals the boy’s attention and even as he tries to figure out what is going on, we see the wind start whipping up and suddenly a pack of frightened wolves knocks him over in their mad rush to get to safety. As the camera pans up, we see the wall of fire that so many people who have dealt with wildfires would recognize immediately.

The scene is maybe three or four minutes long and yet it makes an immediate impact. And while it doesn’t directly refer to the crossover, we know that the entire reason that members of the 118 are heading to Austin is to help combat a wildfire (which makes sense as California firefighters usually have a long history of dealing with these fires).

Maybe it is because of the way Lone Star ended, losing a member of their team, or perhaps it is the young boy in the woods about to be overwhelmed by fire, but this episode ended in a way that leaves you wanting more. And that more is the arrival of firefighters we are already fans of.

This crossover event will set the stage for the future. It will give us an idea if this will ever happen again. And, hopefully, it ends up giving 9-1-1: Lone Star an added boost in the viewers, as fans of Buck, Eddie, and Hen will follow the trio as they head to the Lone Star state.
