The trailer for the upcoming HBO limited series Mare of Easttown has arrived and it looks to continue the network’s recent run of prestige, female-fronted psychological dramas that already include such notable performances as Amy Adams in Sharp Objects and Nicole Kidman in The Undoing. Now it’s Oscar winner Kate Winslet’s turn, in her first television role in a decade.

Here, Winslet stars as the eponymous Mare, who pronounces her name like the word for a female horse, rather than with two syllables. She’s a detective in a small Pennsylvania town, the sort of place where her infamous game-winning shot during a high-school basketball game as a teen means she’s still a local celebrity decades later.

Now, Mare is a detective heading the investigation of a disturbing local murder under trying personal circumstances, a case which appears to bring a lot of her own past traumas back to light. The seven-episode series is billed as an “exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.”

The trailer is very atmospheric and features a lot of Winslet looking pensive and troubled in a variety of settings and sporting a very distinctive East Coast accent.

The clip shows us our first glimpses of Mare of Easttown’s stacked supporting cast, including the indomitable Jean Smart as Mare’s mother Helen and American Horror Story (and now WandaVision) regular Evan Peters as country detective Colin Zabel, assigned to assist Mare’s investigation.

Other notable faces include The Outsider’s Julianne Nicholson as Lori Ross, Mare’s best friend since childhood; as well as Winslet’s former Mildred Pierce co-star Guy Pearce as local creative writing professor Richard Ryan.

The series is set to premiere on HBO on Sunday, April 18. It will also stream on HBO Max.
