The return of Evanescence

We saw a lot of artists return to form in 2020, including ’90s favorites like Fiona Apple and Brandy, but none felt quite as timely as Evanescence’s return. In April, the band dropped their first single, “Wasted On You,” off of their fifth studio album, The Bitter Truth.

The Bitter Truth marks Evanescence’s first studio album with original content in almost a decade. Led by lead singer Amy Lee’s angelical voice, “Wasted On You” is a soulful ballad about feeling stuck in a dead-end relationship, which doubled nicely as a theme to the pandemic lockdown. In fact, the video for “Wasted On You” was filmed via the band members’ iPhones during lockdown and then edited together for a revealing look at pandemic life.

Subsequent songs from The Bitter Truth included “Use My Voice,” which was released in August as a song about speaking out in order to promote a more just world. The band also used the song to work with HeadCount, an organization that assisted in voter registration in the 2020 election. Lee has stated that she was inspired by a victim’s testimony during the Stanford University sexual assault cases trail to create a song regarding public and political issues. The full album for The Bitter Truth is slated to be released in March of 2021.
