Birds of Prey

Following the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman and the popularity of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn from 2016’s Suicide Squad, DCEU doubled-down on Harley by creating an entire movie centered around her story of emancipating herself from her relationship with the Joker. Along the way, she would come across several other anti-heroes, like Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Finding themselves the target of a common enemy, the women worked to take save each other as well as the life of a not-so-innocent thief named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).

While the movie deviated a fair amount from the comic book source material, it remained a stylish, fun, and irreverent look at the lives of some of the lesser-known female characters of the DCEU. Although the film didn’t perform well at the box office, it was released at the beginning of the pandemic shutdown, it did go on to gain popularity in VOD options later in the year, developing a cult-like following. Robbie is slated to return as Harley in next year’s The Suicide Squad (sequel?). However, there is no news as of yet if we’ll see the Birds of Prey take flight again any time soon.
