With Warner Bros. announcement that its 2021 lineup will debut on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously, which films can we expect to watch at home?

Warner Bros. Pictures changed the game when it announced that Wonder Woman 1984 would debut on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously on December 25 (a Christmas miracle, indeed!), but apparently the film studio wasn’t quite done with the surprises. It followed that reveal with another announcement: that all of its 2021 films would hit HBO Max and theaters at the same time.

It’s a controversial decision to say the least, and one that has moviegoers and theater chains questioning what the future of new releases might look like post-pandemic. It does, however, finally bring movie lovers some of their most-anticipated blockbusters during a time that would have been otherwise devoid of content.

So, which movies can we expect to debut on HBO Max within the next year or so? (Note that these could change depending on production delays or other obstacles.)

Wonder Woman 1984 – December 25, 2020

As mentioned, Wonder Woman 1984 was the first film to be confirmed for simultaneous streaming and theatrical release. The DC sequel was already delayed multiple times this year, and rather than push it back once more, it seems Warner Bros. decided to just let it go. After a long year with few blockbusters, it will no doubt be an exciting release for many. The follow-up to Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film will see Gal Gadot’s Diana and Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor taking on Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah in a completely new time period. (Yes, it looks every bit as fun as it sounds.)

Mortal Kombat – January 15, 2021

Whether movie lovers truly wanted or needed a Mortal Kombat reboot remains up for debate, but those looking forward to James Wan’s take on the film won’t have to wait much longer to watch it. Evidently, this addition to the franchise will be truer to the source material. Fans of the video game will definitely want to keep it on their radars.

The Little Things – January 29, 2021

With Denzel Washington and Rami Malek at the head, it’s difficult to see how The Little Things could be anything but good. A cop thriller that involves the two hunting down a serial killer, the film may not be groundbreaking in terms of plot. However, it still could prove a fun way to kick off the year — especially since we probably still won’t be going anywhere in January.
