Warrior Nun is based on the comic book character Warrior Nun Areala created by Ben Dunn. Originally developed as a feature film adaptation, Netflix re-imagined the story as a television series. The series is led by Ava (Baptista), a quadriplegic orphan who is resurrected from the dead and now possesses supernatural powers that force her to join an ancient order of warrior nuns, shepherded by Sister Beatrice (Tonteri-Young). The warrior nuns are tasked with fighting demons (both literal and figurative) on Earth, while Ava faces off against opposing forces who want to find and control her. The series is filmed in multiple lavish locations throughout Spain.
While the show could easily be dismissed as a flashy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer-inspired knockoff, Warrior Nun has a surprising amount of depth to it. Ava struggles with her newfound powers and responsibilities but eventually learns to work together with the other warrior nuns to become the hero she was meant to be.
Naturally, sisterhood plays a big part of the series, as each nun has their own distinct personalities and motivations, but they ultimately come together to teach Ava how to use her abilities in the fight against evil. The warrior nuns eventually find themselves embroiled in a fight against a corrupt Cardinal who will stop at nothing to become the new Pope. This show puts a whole new meaning to fighting the patriarchy.
Warrior Nun has been renewed for a second season, which is expected to begin filming in early 2021.
