Netflix renews fantasy drama Warrior Nun for season 2

Netflix has renewed the fantasy drama Warrior Nun for another season of demon fighting, celestial mysteries, and empowered female friendship.

Apparently some good things can still happen in 2020: Netflix has announced that fantasy drama Warrior Nun will return for a second season.

Based on the popular Warrior Nun Areala manga, the action-packed series follows the adventures of a group of butt-kicking women known as the Order of the Cruciform Sword, nuns whose sacred charge is to protect the world from demons with the help of a magical artifact known as a Halo. When the decidedly nonreligious orphan Ava becomes the unwitting Halo Bearer, she must decide what she’s willing to fight for.

Warrior Nun not only features exceptional action sequences but an intriguing array of female lead characters with their own issues and agendas to deal with. It’s exactly the sort of show we need more of, with its focus on female friendship, empowerment, and interiority.

And this renewal is particularly great news for fans, given that the series wrapped up its first season on something of a massive cliffhanger. (Look, Shotgun Mary is going to be fine, okay.)

The season 2 announcement comes roughly a month and a half or so after the series’ Netflix debut. The streaming giant released a video of showrunner Simon Barry sharing the news with cast members Alba Baptista, Toya Turner, Lorena Andrea, Kristina Tonteri-Young, and Olivia Delcan.

(Spoiler alert: It’s lovely.)

Of course, there’s no clear date as yet on when we might expect to see season 2. With Hollywood production slowly grinding back to life after months’ worth of coronavirus-mandated shutdowns, virtually everything is still finding its footing in this new reality. But, we were unlikely to see Warrior Nun season 2 before next summer at the earliest. so there’s every chance that it’ll stay on track. Fingers crossed.
