American Horror Story: Murder House
Murder House remains my favorite season of AHS to date. (Which is obviously not the same thing as the best, but I mean, it’s in the #2 slot here, so it’s very close.)
The one that started it all, the series’ first season brought the great Jessica Lange to television alongside a cast that includes Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott and told a gripping haunted house story fueled by human conflicts such as infidelity and abuse. Murder House has plenty of genuine scares and disturbing twists, but the heart of this season is family – of the genuine, twisted and ghostly variety.
Murder House is also one of the most successful seasons of AHS in terms of weaving in many different stories into the primary narrative. Historical subplots include everything from the infamous Black Dahlia murder, to a doctor who somehow reanimates his dead child and the brutal murder of a group of nursing students, but they all manage to tie back to the story of evil lurking in a particular place.
