A new clue is an obvious give away as to who is inside Whatchamacallit on The Masked Singer.

A current NBA player is definitely behind the mask of Whatchamacallit on The Masked Singer

Earlier, this author had a strong feeling Whatchamacallit on FOX’s popular reality hit was Metta Sandiford-Artest, the NBA champion formerly known as Metta World Peace and, beforehand, Ron Artest.  Clues linking this masked performer to basketball, music, and feeling overshadowed seemed like it was pointing to Sandiford-Artest.

However, the latest clue points that this masked celebrity is most likely NBA player Lonzo Ball, who currently plays for the New Orleans Pelicans and is a former Los Angeles Laker.

The latest clue

The character says everything was on the up-and-up in his career before a phone call changed everything. He would discover his mother was sick “and wanted to be by her side. But she wanted me to continue the ride.” In addition, an image of dimes appeared on the screen before the package concluded.

This all points to Lonzo. Zo played basketball for UCLA during the 2016-17 season and was a standout player becoming the season’s NCAA leader in assists. His freshmen campaign was turning him into a household name and increasing his NBA draft stock. Suddenly, Lonzo received a text from a relative (before his father could tell him in-person) his mother, Tina, had suffered a stroke.

When he wanted to be with her, his father Lavar Ball insisted Lonzo continue to play while he takes care of Lonzo’s mother. Lonzo would lead the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 and after the season wrapped, he entered the 2017 NBA Draft.

The dimes at the end of the package represent one of Lonzo’s best qualities on the basketball court. The point guard is known for his vision on the court and for “dropping dimes,” a slang term for finding his open teammates to rack up assists.

Earlier clues

Before Whatchamacallit’s debut performance, the character says people may think he’s shy because he let others absorb his spotlight. This could very much be Lonzo as he’s shared the limelight with his father, Lavar.

In joint interviews with his father, Lavar has always been more outspoken and been his sons’ most vocal hype man — raising Lonzo’s brothers LiAngelo and LaMelo to be professional basketball players as well. Lavar also founded the Big Baller Brand where he made antique shoes and apparel to merchandise Lonzo.

The package included references saying this star is far from shy as he’s branched out to do other things. This is true with Lonzo engaging in gigs such as being a guest star on Netflix original sitcom Fuller House, a regular on Facebook Watch reality series Ball in the Family, and a special appearance on WWE Raw.

There was also an image of a disc-jockey turntable. This could be a hint to Lonzo’s music endeavors as he’s released two albums with Born to Ball (2018) and Bounce Back Album (2020).

One of the biggest giveaways was when the first package showed a clock with the hour hand pointing at two. Lonzo has worn No. 2 with the Bruins, Lakers, and Pelicans. The six-foot-six-inches tall point guard was also the second draft selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, selected after Markelle Fultz.

Other possible candidates

The show’s judge Ken Jeong linked this masked character to NBA player Damian Lillard. Under his alias Dame D.O.L.L.A. (Different on Levels the Lord Allows), the five-time NBA All-Star is very much in-tune with his hip-hop career releasing three studio albums in The Letter O (2016), Confirmed (2017), and Big D.O.L.L.A. (2019). Outside the basic music and basketball correlations, the clues are off-par with the NBA superstar. Also, the Portland Trailblazers star player has not been overshadowed as the city of Portland has created a mural to honor Lillard’s legacy in August.

Another logical option is Derek Fisher. Currently, the head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, Fisher is a former five-time NBA Champion for the Lakers. The starting point guard, who sported a No. 2 purple and gold jersey, was overshadowed by teammates Shaquille O’Neal and the late Kobe Bryant. Plus, D-Fish has competed on Dancing with the Stars season 25 and was once a guest star on UPN’s sitcom Eve. However, midway through his career, it was his newborn daughter who faced health issues with a tumor — not his mother. While Fisher seems like a good guess, it seems very likely the former Laker behind Whatchamacallit is Lonzo.

Thus far, Whatchamacallit has survived two eliminations in Group B fending off characters The Gremlin and The Baby Alien. This character is definitely hanging in there to keep this mystery alive on season four.
