6. Star Trek: Discovery

Slotting in at number six is the first show to spearhead the “rebirth” of Star Trek — or rather, the modern era of the show. That’s Star Trek: Discovery. The series follows Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), the adoptive sister of Spock, as she returns to duty on a ship after being court-martialed after committing an attempted mutiny and inadvertently beginning a war with the Klingons. At her new post on the USS Discovery, she meets Saru, Tilly, Stamets, and a whole slew of characters whose personal lives are interwoven with the complicated, long-running story arcs that make up each season of Discovery.

Although season one wasn’t the strongest, and often got in its own way by trying to juggle too many balls at once, the introduction of Pike, Number One, and Reno in season two injected a new life into the show and made us excited to see what the future of the series has to offer. Some fans treat the show harshly because of how much it relies on the plot as opposed to character-driven storytelling, but we try to give Discovery the benefit of the doubt. After all, even the best Trek shows fumbled in their early seasons.

With the season two finale ending on a time-bending cliffhanger, we’re excited to see where Star Trek: Discovery picks up when season three begins.
