Kacen Callendar’s Felix Ever After is being adapted by Amazon
Amazon Studios is adapting Kacen Callendar’s Felix Ever After as a television series. Here’s what we know.
The amount of good news we’ve gotten lately has been severely lacking, but the announcement that Kacen Callendar’s Felix Ever After is being adapted into a series by Amazon is beyond good — it’s utterly amazing! If you haven’t read this book, do yourself a favor and get a copy. It will have you smiling and crying and yelling at the people trying to hurt Felix. I listened to the audiobook earlier this year, and I already know it will be one of my favorite books of 2020.
If you haven’t read it, Felix Ever After tells the story of Felix Love (who, ironically, has never been in love) and his journey to figure out who he is and who is attacking him at school and online. Along with that, he fears that he is one marginalization too many (Black, queer, and transgender) to be loved.
But while he’s contemplating that, someone deadnames him at school and sends him evil Instagram messages. In response, Felix plots his revenge, despite not knowing exactly who the culprit is. Through his plans for revenge, he finds out new things about people he thought he had all figured out — and more importantly, he learns more about himself.
On top of all this, he also has a draft folder full of emails (over 400) to his mother who left him and who he hasn’t spoken to since he came out as trans.
According to Deadline, the book will be adapted by Amazon Studios and Field Trip Productions. Field Trip Productions is run by Will Graham, the executive producer of Mozart in the Jungle, and former UTA agent, Hailey Wierengo. Stephanie Dietz is in charge of the project at Field Trip Productions.

Casting hasn’t begun yet, but if they don’t cast a Black transgender teen (or 20-something because that’s how teen shows seem to work), they don’t deserve to have the rights to adapt this book. This show deserves the thoughtfulness and the care Callendar gave the book, and I hope it gets it.
I’m already picturing certain scenes from the novel and how they will translate onscreen. I cannot wait to see Felix and Ezra hanging out together, and when Felix goes to the LGBTQ+ community center for discussion groups. Usually, my response to book-to-television adaptations is trepidation, but I could not be more excited about this one (and I know I’m not alone).
