Fear the Walking Dead’s season six trailer and air date were revealed at Comic-Con@Home, and both were a bit of a surprise. The show is going to get seriously dark this season, even by TWD standards.

Season six of Fear the Walking Dead will premiere later this year on October 11. The show’s  transformation continues in season six, at least judging by the stark trailer that was revealed at Comic-Con@Home this weekend. The show went through a soft reboot between seasons three and four and has been steadily carving out a new path ever since.

It’s not easy for a spin-off of one of the most successful genre series in history to be authentically unique while maintaining its place in the same universe, but Fear the Walking Dead has managed it. And in season six, it might even get darker than the original series.

At the end of season five, the characters were forced to accept Virginia’s terms in order to survive. Virginia split them up and assigned them to different communities that are under her authority. Alone, apart, and facing an uncertain future as season six begins, the survivors are in a precarious position and it looks like they’re going to have an entirely new kind of fight to survive this season.

Not all of season six has been filmed yet, although the first half of the season is essentially finished according to the showrunners. Anytime the survivors are split up, the story is bleak because so much of their strength comes from their commitment to each other and their willingness to sacrifice for one another. It will be interesting to see how these beloved characters adapt when they are forced to survive, or die, on their own.

A Late Start

Usually Fear the Walking Dead airs in the spring or summer, while The Walking Dead’s latest season begins in October. But due to current events and only the first half of the season being finished this year, Fear the Walking Dead‘s premiere date is a very late October 11.

The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond will premiere the Sunday before on October 4. That means that TWD fans will have to wait a bit longer to see how the Fear characters fare in Virginia’s world, but when October arrives, there will be new episodes of all three shows to dig into.
