Work in Progress
Another semi-autobiographical show (a running theme here, perhaps), Work in Progress follows Abby (Abby McEnany who also co-created and executive produces the show), a suicidal self-proclaimed “fat dyke” who begins counting down her remaining days with a jar of almonds received from a passive-aggressive coworker.
When the almonds run out, so will Abby. At least, that’s her plan until she meets Chris (the fabulous Theo Germaine, The Politician), a trans man half her age who slowly pulls her out of her shell and rocks her world. If you aren’t in love with him, too, by the end of your binge, call a doctor.
While the premise is dark, Work in Progress is funny, charming, and incredibly romantic. Abby and Chris’s relationship is tentative and tender, but also real and captivating. And Work in Progress doesn’t shy away from discussing mental health in all of its complexities. While there are jokes, it never feels unserious.
The first season of Work in Progress is available to stream through Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and Showtime.
