The first teaser for the Snyder Cut of Justice League is here, and it puts the villain Darkseid in the limelight.

DCEU fans have been calling for the release of the Snyder Cut of Justice League for what feels like ages, and HBO Max finally announced last month that it would give it to them. Zack Snyder has been hinting that his version of the film would have played out very differently than the one that made it into theaters in 2017 — most notably because it would have focused on the team going up against a different villain.

And as though the knowledge that the Snyder Cut will be arriving on the platform next year wasn’t enough to excite fans unsatisfied with the original film, HBO Max released a teaser of the Snyder Cut this week. Although our first look at the new Justice League is a short one, it’s one that puts Darkseid in the limelight — and the result is eerie to say the least.

For those who aren’t familiar with the DC Comics character Darkseid, he’s a villain on par with Marvel’s Thanos — far more powerful and dangerous than Steppenwolf, the villain used in Justice League, and far more determined to annihilate human beings’ free will.

Watch the teaser for the Snyder Cut here:

The new footage opens with someone — presumably Darkseid — saying, “The bell’s already been rung, and they’ve heard it. But in the dark, among the stars, ding dong, the god is dead.” This dialogue is accompanied by a visual of Diana discovering an ancient image of the villain, segueing into Darkseid himself standing in front of fiery destruction (possibly his home planet Apokolips). The whole thing is enough to send shivers down your spine, and it does make it seem like this version of the film will be more on par with what fans wanted from the original — though we’ll have to watch the whole thing before officially making that call.

HBO Max has yet to announce an official release date for the Snyder Cut, but it’s slated to be released sometime in 2021. Until then, at least fans have some footage of what’s to come. Let the speculations begin!
