The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth

Happily ever afters do not exist in The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth, at least not to Saoirse. To her, if HEAs existed, then her mom wouldn’t have early onset dementia. If they existed, then she wouldn’t be looking at her mother and seeing her own potential future of losing her memory and having to live out her days in a care home. There’s no point in believing in happy endings or dreaming of love at first sight. It’s unrealistic, and reality has become Saoirse’s closest companion.

Ruby, however, threatens to up end that cynical mode of thinking when the two meet at a house party. Ruby is unbothered by Saoirse’s lack of romanticism, and she’s fine with her not being interested in a relationship. It’s not going to stop Ruby from liking Saoirse. Besides, dating can be fun; it doesn’t need to be desperate, passionate, and painful.

The term is done, the summer is here, and Ruby loves a rom-com, so she figures their non-relationship can be like that, a montage of dates that could come straight out of a romantic comedy. Movies have a set end time, and so will their summer romance. It’s an ingenious, fool-proof loophole, and once autumn comes, Ruby and Saoirse will part ways as they agreed.

No harm done, no deeper feelings had, right? Besides, rom-coms are fiction. Two people going on romantic dates, having fun together, and learning more about each other don’t fall in love. That’s the kind of thing that only happens in make believe, in worlds where happy endings come a dime a dozen. So, it’s fine. Completely fine. Everything should go as planned.

The Falling in Love Montage will be available in print, audio, and e-book format June 9.
