We’ve seen so many superheroes spend entire movie and television series attempting to hide their identities that the very end of Iron Man is a jaw-dropper for all the right reasons. Not only does Tony getting on stage and telling a room full of reporters and government officials that he’s Ironman throw a wrench in the common and expected comic trope, but it’s just so in character for him.

This decision also alerts the world to the existence of superheroes, which is one of the most important developments in the MCU, given how much of its storylines are based on the Avengers and their relationship with the public (and the government). Had Tony kept quiet about being Iron Man, the Infinity Saga would have unfolded differently. (For the record, we’re glad it didn’t.)

And let’s be honest: The applause that greets him after this announcement is basically an extension of the audience’s feelings. Because we love Tony Stark as Iron Man.
