8. Recess

Recess is the epitome of a classic 90s classic cartoon. It aired from 1997 to 2001 and followed a group of fourth-grade kids as they go through their day at school and on the playground. The main characters included TJ, the popular one, Vince, the athletic one, Spinelli, the tough girl, Mikey, the gentle one,  Gretchen, the smart girl, and Gus, the new kid.

Each episode followed the kids as they tried to solve some problem. The problems ranged from dealing with a bully to a first kiss to a disagreement between friends.

The show also featured the original Mean Girls on this show in The Ashleys. They are the school’s clique of fashionable snobby girls and their catchphrase is “Ooh, scandalous.” They’re the villains of many of the episodes, but also, one of the most memorable parts of Recess. I can still picture them now.

Recess stands out because it showed kids to be their own people with the freedom to solve their own problems and make their own choices. It also provided enough characters with unique personalities that everyone had someone they could relate to.
