4. Daria

If you are a true ’90s child, you know and love Daria. The show came about when the character of Daria was featured on Beavis and Butt-Head and then she got her own series on MTV. It aired from 1997 to 2002 and was followed by two TV movies.

Daria was so popular because of how different she was for the time. Daria is a smart, sarcastic, pessimistic, sad teenager who doesn’t let anyone tell her who she is. The show uses Daria and her life to look at high school life, pop culture, and social issues in a smart and often funny way.

But while Daria is the main character, the show is not all about her. It also features her best friend and aspiring artist, Jane Lane,  Quinn, Daria’s sister who could not be more different than her sister  if she tried, and Daria’s parents who do not get her at all (and also have their own neuroses).

The series focuses on Daria’s life as she moves through high school and deals with things most teens go through. She worries about losing Jane to a boy, wonders how to deal with her parents, and winds up helping many of her fellow students whether she likes it or not.
