Don’t worry, The New Mutants is still planned for a theatrical release
Despite being delayed on multiple occasions, The New Mutants is still getting a theatrical release — it’s just unclear when.
The New Mutants has seen a bumpier road than most movies. After being delayed multiple times — partly because Disney was originally unhappy with it after acquiring 20th Century Fox — the film finally landed a definitive April 3 release date. Unfortunately, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis derailed that, forcing the film to be pushed back once more. And although Disney has announced new release dates for some of the titles on its schedule, it has yet to address The New Mutants.
Because of this — and because the film was recently available for pre-order on Amazon — many fans assumed the long-awaited addition to the X-Men franchise would forego a theatrical release altogether, heading straight to digital instead. But anyone who was hoping to see this horror-tinged take on X-Men on the big screen can rest easy: It seems The New Mutants is still getting a theatrical release after all.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is still planning on a theatrical release for The New Mutants — there’s just no definitive answer as to when it will arrive. It makes sense that the studio would want to wait for a clearer picture of when movie theaters will reopen and things will return to some semblance of normal, especially after having delayed the film prior to COVID-19.
It seems X-Men fans may be waiting a while before they can officially add The New Mutants to their calendars, but at least they’ll be able to count on seeing it in theaters. After all, if any movie deserves to finally premiere in theaters, it’s this one. And you know those dark, eerie sequences will look much better on the big screen than it would on our televisions at home.
Are you excited to see The New Mutants when movie theaters reopen? Or would you prefer it to have gone straight to VOD?
