After uncertain collabs, Making the Cut asked the contestants to show their fight. If these fashion designers cannot rise to the occasion, their time on the show is up.
Making the Cut is all about finding the next big fashion brand. While some designers might not have a huge hit with every look, they need to prove that they have the grit to succeed. After last week’s lackluster fashion show, this week’s episode took a drastic turn.
Spoiler Alert: If you have not watched episode 4 of Making the Cut, there are spoilers ahead.
When Making the Cut episode 3 ended, Troy’s fate was uncertain. Initially, the judges were going to eliminate both Troy and Josh. But, as Heidi says, a conversation can change everything.
As Troy answered the judges’ questions, it appeared that a change was coming. Naomi believes that a great tailor is craftsman, and that a craftsman can survive. Even though the tide is changing for Troy, he needs to listen.
The judges, except for Heidi, agreed to give Troy a second chance. Still, there is a huge caveat. If Troy does not listen to these critiques and continues creating poor looks, there will be no more passes. Basically, if he doesn’t send an impeccable look down the runway, his time on the show is up.
Since the collab fashion show was lackluster, Heidi and Tim create a big challenge to test the fashion designers’ grit and determination. The designers will have just seven hours to create an accessible look. They must use leftover fabric from previous challenges.
This episode’s challenge is quite difficult. From the lack of fabric choices to the limited time frame, tensions were definitely high. Even the usually friendly workroom got a little feisty.
The biggest takeaway from this Making the Cut episode is that the designers who listen are the ones getting noticed. While each designer needs to stay true to their brand, they need to listen to the judges’ feedback.
Additionally, the fashion designers need to show that they want to win. With $1 million at stake, no one should just present a throw away look.
As the fashion designers braced for their critiques, it was interesting that they asked Rinat some questions. She has been in the middle throughout the first couple of episodes. In some ways, she is the ghost in the room. Although the feedback was minimal, at least everyone got to hear her commentary.
Building on the success from the last episode, Megan’s design was a top look. Her asymmetrical top and effortless pants were a huge hit. While she wanted to channel a modern, chic girl, the look was versatile. Many women would love to have either or both pieces in their closets.
Jonny’s was also a top look. While he might have described his dress as something Beetlejuice’s daughter would wear, it presented another layer to Jonny’s design aesthetic. There was an ease to the dress, but it is recognizable as his “girl.”
More importantly, Jonny is listening to the judges’ feedback. They said that they wanted to see more than just his leather jacket. This dress is a perfect complement to a leather jacket. It was definitely a head turner.
This episode’s winner was Jonny. His dress was made available in the Amazon store. But, like all previous looks, those offerings sell out quickly.
Unfortunately, Troy did not rise to the level that was needed in this challenge. After being told to show his expert tailoring, his jacket and dress were subpar.
As his critique started, he said that he was happy with the concept. The problem is that Troy was not presenting a concept, he was presenting a look. An over-sized dress under an ill-fitting jacket was a poor choice.
Since he never really showed the judges his brand, and the looks continued to be ill-fitting, it was time for Troy to leave. If he was supposed to show his grit and fight for his life, Troy fell short.
Unfortunately, Troy was not the only designer sent home. In another twist, the judges called out Will. His look was very confusing and seemed to lack sophistication.
Will chose to make a pair of pants, something he does not usually do. This challenge was not the time to try something new. Although the judges saw his party girl, the looks are more disco than modern. No one is looking to go back to Studio 54, even in those looks.
Since Will lacked sophistication, he couldn’t convince the judges that he deserved to stay. Will was sent home.
In the next episode of Making the Cut, the designers head to Japan. Will a favorite fall from grace?
What did you think of Making the Cut‘s double elimination? Would you buy Jonny’s dress?
