The conclusion to Alex Karev’s story fans have been waiting for airs this Thursday as part of a special tribute episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

For a few seasons now, only four Grey’s Anatomy original cast members and their characters remained: Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).

There’s constant speculation among fans about who will be the next current or OG character to go — and how the show will write them off. Many characters over the years have died, while others were granted less dramatic endings. Some, like Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), still get mentioned regularly on the show even if they don’t appear onscreen.

Many fans didn’t think Alex would be the next character they were going to have to say goodbye to. But Chambers’ final episode aired back in November, and the show has slowly been building up to his character’s “official” departure for weeks.

“Alex is in Iowa” has been the accepted explanation for his absence thus far — at least, it had been, until last week’s episode revealed that Alex never actually made it to this mother’s, which is where he originally told Jo he was heading.

Based on this week’s promo, it looks very much like Alex’s story isn’t going to end on a happy note. This week, fans will finally see the end of his run in a special farewell episode. Through a series of flashbacks and real-time events, we’ll get to join the cast and their characters in both reminiscings on Alex/Chambers’ time on the show and in saying goodbye one last time.

This likely won’t be the last we will ever hear about him. Key characters like Jo and Meredith will have a lot of grieving to do after this loss (however it ends up playing out). With a character who has changed and grown as much as Alex has, you don’t just forget about him. Like Cristina and other characters, he’s still a part of the show’s heart, even if his story comes to an end.

How exactly the show is going to handle all this, we’re not sure. One thing’s for certain, though: Tears are almost a guarantee.

Watch how it all unfolds tonight — and remember: It’s OK to cry. We certainly will be.
