When a major blizzard hits Seattle during this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, DeLuca makes a reckless decision that could change everything. Will Meredith be able to help?

This season of Grey’s Anatomy has thrown countless twists and turns our way — everything from surprise pregnancies (more than one!) and bad breakups to characters forced to confront past demons and petty spouses buying entire hospitals out of spite.

There’s still plenty of season 16 left to go, and it seems things are only just starting to heat up. Or, in the case of this week’s episode, cool down?

The snow is coming down dangerously hard and fast in Seattle. Outdoor conditions have become life-threatening — also threatening the lives of patients in critical condition. When DeLuca learns of one patient in desperate need of help, he chooses to risk his life in order to save them.

Carina and Meredith were already worried for DeLuca’s well-being before he snapped at Meredith last week. Now that he’s irrationally threatening his own life, someone is going to have to step in and demand he gets some help … that is, if he makes it out of that blizzard alive.

Major disasters are usually reserved for season finales on this show, but Grey’s isn’t wasting any time pumping up the drama 15 episodes in. It’s not very likely we’re going to lose DeLuca anytime soon, but it’s clear this might be the incident that finally forces some sense into him.

Mental health has been a major theme throughout season 16. We watched Jo undergo treatment for her depression, and we might soon see Richard dealing with a similar situation (if Bailey’s assumptions are correct). And Catherine … well. We’ve always known Catherine has had plenty of issues she needed to work through.

Having DeLuca facing the same symptoms and diagnosis as his father would make a lot of what’s happened over the past few seasons make much more sense. Explaining his behavior is absolutely the right move.

And how will Meredith handle all this — both as his boss and his ex-girlfriend? We’ll just have to wait and see where he ends up by the end of the episode.
