Grey’s Anatomy season 16 episode 14 review: Two breakups and a happy ending
By Meg Dowell
During this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Amelia finally confronts Link about her decision, and Carina tells Meredith she’s worried about Andrew.
Well, Grey’s Anatomy fans, it looks as though we’re actually not going to find out who fathered Amelia’s baby. Ever.
The plus side to this is that we may never have to suffer the reality that Owen could be the father, something plenty of people were very clear they did not want. The negative? Amelia still told Link she doesn’t want him to be part of her (their?) child’s life. Which was… selfish? And we kind of really want to give the poor guy a hug?
Amelia doesn’t want to be involved with someone who won’t love her no matter what. Which makes sense from her perspective. But he does still have a right to know, and technically, he could take legal action and force her to get the test results against her will. Would he do that? It didn’t seem in character a few weeks ago, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising now if he did.
Things probably aren’t “over” between them, at least in terms of figuring out how to move forward. No happy ending for these two though, at least not for the foreseeable future.
And guess who else doesn’t get their happily ever after? MerLuca, who already broke up once, and never technically got back together — except DeLuca convinced himself they had? It’s unclear whether or not Meredith was on the same page there. She was a little busy worrying about DeLuca possibly experiencing a manic episode. Yikes.
Surprise! Carina is back for no reason other than to convey significant information to another character in under a minute of screen time, only to disappear into the void once more until she’s needed again. But she did have good intel, if you will: She thinks Andrew is acting a little too much like their father, and really, that would explain a lot.
In this episode, we do finally get to see him (and Reilly!) solve the mystery diagnosis that has set DeLuca over the edge. Side note: We need more cases like this as storylines again. It’s been far too long. Even once-in-a-lifetime cases that aren’t realistic, but at this point, does it matter?
Because, of course, Suzanne has an extremely rare disease — somehow Grey Sloan just attracts these cases (or there’s something in that Seattle water?). But she’s the only character who gets a truly happy ending in this episode. She gets to see her kids again, and she’s not dead! Yay!
DeLuca and Meredith definitely don’t make it out of this one in a good place. No down-talking Andrew if he really is going through something — it would explain his insufferable behavior over the last few seasons for sure. But Meredith did not deserve being screamed at like that. We hope she does write him up. Consequences, you know?
Based on what we saw from next week’s promo, this DeLuca storyline isn’t over yet. He’s going to do something else reckless … and it’s probably going to put his life, if not others’ lives, at risk.
Meredith should still support him, at the very least from the POV of a caring boss who doesn’t want to see him get hurt or put others in danger. But this is a pretty sure sign they aren’t going to get back together anytime soon. He needs help. He needs to take a step back and focus on his mental health, as so many others have on the show lately.
Speaking of focusing on mental health, is Jo going to be okay? Because Alex has officially abandoned everyone, even Mer. Those three dots don’t lie: He’s definitely side-stepping more people than just his wife.
How are they going to handle his exit? We still don’t know. They’re setting things up for just about anything, whether it be asking Jo to move to Iowa with him, the two of them breaking up, or something tragic happening to him offscreen.
Whatever does end up happening, we’re not ready to say goodbye.
Only sad endings. Mostly. Why are we not surprised?
