One mammogram, two odd sex dreams, and our three favorite ladies made The Bold Type exactly what we’d hoped for this week.

Andrew is a drag queen named Jacqueline Carmichael.

It may not be the most important takeaway from The Bold Type this week, but wow, was it a beautiful way to start off an episode.

The revelation did pretty well setting the tone for the night, though.

If you took a drink every time someone said some variation of “things are changing” this week, you probably didn’t survive the episode. On the bright side, if your game has been to drink every time “the dot com” is mentioned, you got away with just one this week! Progress!

It’s time for the digital get-down at Scarlet magazine. (Hey, if The Good Place can bring that *NSYNC hit back, so can I.)

The first order of business for Jacqueline and the team is to simply launch the new, digital-only version of Scarlet. Of course, it’s anything but simple. Not only do they have to come up with an idea for and shoot Scarlet’s first digital cover, but they have to plan and execute a party to do it.

For what it’s worth, The Bold Type is staying fairly true to how this would go in real life. More and more publications are switching over to a solely digital platform. Launching said platform and planning a party to do so in just a week? Less realistic.

It did provide the perfect opportunity to see what Jacqueline and Scarlet do best, though. They pull off a beautiful 60-year retrospective — which made for some incredible guest stars this week, hi Ayesha Curry! — celebrating what Scarlet has achieved in its time.

But, as someone said every few seconds, things are changing. Everyone is moving forward, and there’s no getting around it.

For Kat, the process is moving a bit slowly, and forcing her to reckon with a choice in her past. Turns out, Kat had the opportunity to help young pop star Bella Diaz come out to the world. But Diaz’s manager shut it down, and Bella remains in the closet.

It’s a poignant struggle to watch Kat – a woman who’s now out, proud and thriving – deal with. As always, she handles it with grace, and secures a friendship with Bella in the process. Worth noting: it was nice seeing Kat simply be friends with another woman, and not have it turn to something romantic, just to add conflict to the Kadena situation.

For Jane, moving forward means getting her first mammogram. Once again, it’s a testament to the writers of this show that this storyline has been consistently weaved in so well. Fortunately, Jane’s fine. It’s pretty safe to say we all breathed a sigh of relief with her in the fashion closet, right?

Now that that’s taken care of for now, it’s become clear that half of her anxiety actually stemmed from Ryan. She doesn’t trust him anymore, and she knows it. She probably knew it to begin with, but her subconscious went ahead and proved it with a few odd sex dreams.

Sadly, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see them start hashing it out. Jane not only chickened out on telling him, but she was also called away on important business.

In news that surprised literally no one: Sutton’s engaged y’all!

No, Jane and Kat weren’t surprised, because Richard had already asked for their blessing. It may seem a little old school, but for this writer, whose best friend’s now-fiancé recently asked for a blessing as well, it was a real joy to see. The best friends must always approve.

The news of Sutton’s engagement did interrupt a pretty sweet vibe Kat had going – wine, a bubble bath, and a secret unreleased song from Bella – but we’ll forgive it. This is a massive step forward.

It is a bit insane how that concept can sound exciting and full of promise when it’s coming from Kat, yet downright threatening when RJ Safford tells Jacqueline “Starting tomorrow, no more looking back.”

Regardless, there’s a lot to look forward to right now. At the top of the list? Three words: Mrs. Dick Hunter.

Next. 20 women under 30 who are making a difference. dark
