Legacies (The CW), 2018-present

As the “youngest” series on our list, Legacies is just in the middle of its second season. But it has already become a cultural phenomena and spiritual successor to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show is the spin-off of a spin-off from The Vampire Diaries, and it features some of the original characters, along with their kids.

Set at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, the series focuses on a group of werewolves, vampires, and witches who are learning to use their powers while also defending the town of Mystic Falls from supernatural threats. It’s combination of wit, heart, hormones, and horror hasn’t been seen since the days of Buffy and her Scooby Gang.

The series centers around Hope Mikaelson (played to perfection by Danielle Rose Russell) as a tribrid (part werewolf, part witch, part vampire) who struggles to come to terms with her tragic past while living with her adoptive family, the Saltzmans. Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis) is the headmaster of the school where his twin witch daughters, Josie (Kaylee Bryant) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd), live and attend school.

Of course, supernatural hijinks ensue, as the school is not only a safe haven for paranormal individuals, but it also houses ancient magical relics that the forces of evil want. When the kids aren’t planning a school dance or fighting over boys, they’re fighting demons and dragons. However, below it’s fantastical exterior, lies a powerful trio of women: Hope, Josie, and Lizzie, all of whom are battling their own inner demons. Hope has trouble fitting in, Josie is a bisexual who is trying to have a life outside of her sister’s shadow, and Lizzie is dealing with mental illness.
