Lost Girl (Syfy), 2010-2015

If Legacies is the spiritual successor of Buffy, then Lost Girl is the same for Angel. While it has its campy supernatural fun, it can also be very dark at times. The series features a mix of human and supernatural characters trying to coexist in the world.

Much of the series focuses on themes of identity, as well as fighting not to succumb to our darker sides. The main character is a succubus named Bo Dennis (played by Anna Silk), who is a rare paranormal individual who must “feed” off the life-energy of others to survive. This also gives her additional powers, such as superhuman strength and enhanced senses, that she uses to her advantage in her profession as a private investigator.

Supporting characters also include Kenzi (Ksenia Solo), Bo’s associate and Russian gypsy roommate, Dr. Lauren Lewis (Zoie Palmer), Bo’s on-again/off-again human love interest, and Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten), a Valkyrie police officer and fae bounty hunter.

It’s important to note that the majority of the male characters, including Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), a werewolf and Tamsin’s detective partner, and Trick McCorrigan (Rick Howland), Bo’s surrogate father and mentor, do not display any toxic masculinity throughout the series’ run. It’s made clear from the start that Bo is no damsel in distress, and the men are there to back her up.
