Doctor Who season 12 will premiere on New Year’s Day
By Lacy Baugher
Doctor Who will officially return for season 12 on New Year’s Day, and we’re all excited to see Jodie Whittaker back in the TARDIS!
Our long (inter)national nightmare is over – Doctor Who is finally returning to our television screens.
We’ve been waiting all year to see Thirteen and friends again, since the series hasn’t aired a new episode since the 2019 New Year’s Day special, “Resolution”. And in a nice bit of symmetry, the new season will premiere on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, with a two-part installment called “Spyfall”.
And, if that’s not enough good news, new episodes of Doctor Who will then continue every Sunday this winter, beginning on January 5. (Two episodes of Who in a single week after going without for months? What an embarrassment of riches!)
To celebrate, BBC America dropped an new trailer for the new season which, while it contains fewer revelations than the initial season 12 launch version, is nonetheless gorgeous, atmospheric and enough to make even the most jaded fans excited.
Watch for yourselves below:
I can’t be the only one who thought about the Arrowverse everytime Thirteen mentioned the “serious crisis” coming in the trailer’s first few moments? Just me?
Jodie Whittaker is back as Thirteen in her second full season as the Doctor, along with Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill as companions Graham, Ryan and Yaz. The season has also already promised a number of a exciting guest stars, including Stephen Fry, Lenny Henry, Goran Višnjić, and Robert Glenister.
We don’t know much about season 12’s overall arc, save for the fact that there will be Judoon and Cybermen involved, and apparently some nebulous threat creeping toward Thirteen which may or may not be the aforementioned Cybermen, but could also be something else entirely. We’ll have to wait and see.
But, happily, only for a few more weeks!
Doctor Who returns to BBC America on January 1, 2020. What do you want to see in the new season? Are you excited for Jodie Whittaker’s return?
