Watchmen season 1 episode 6 review: Angela learns about her past
Taking all of Will Reeves’ Nostalgia may have been a bad move for Angela but at least now she has some answers after this week’s episode of Watchmen.
This week, Watchmen took us to the past — but, more specifically, the past of William Reeves. We found out earlier in the season that William was Angela’s grandfather. And, as she was trying to get answers to the death of Judd, she didn’t exactly share her investigation with those working close to her. So, when Wade was trying to protect her, he basically threw her under the bus and she took all of William’s Nostalgia pills in one go.
The problem is that Nostalgia is basically a drug, and Angela, while taking all of them, essentially overdosed. So, the entire episode was set around cut together memories where William and Angela were interchangeable and went back to his past in a quick yet interesting way. From those memories, we learn that William Reeves was Hooded Justice in the Minutemen.
This means that William Reeves was a closeted gay man who was in love with Captain Metropolis and was forced to live both aspects of his life (being gay and being a black man) hidden underneath his superhero mask. It’s an interesting contrast to the beginning of the episode, when they unmask “Hooded Justice” on the television show about the Minutement to reveal a Cheyenne Jackson playing him — who is very white and has very blue eyes. That’s matched with William having to put on make up around his eyes to make it look as if he isn’t black.
The entire episode gave us an insight into the mystery of William, how Judd actually hung himself, and the connection to Angela and the superheroes that are seemingly taking over her everyday life. But, now that we know she’s alive thanks to Lady Trieu, what does that mean for Angela?
She was placed under arrested by Laurie Blake when she realized what Angela had and what information she knew. But who knows what is really going to happen, especially with the possible death of Looking Glass also on their plate? We’ll have to see in next week’s Watchmen.
