Ewan McGregor can’t stop talking about the new Obi-Wan series
Ewan McGregor can’t stop talking about the new Obi-Wan series (now that he can finally talk about it), slated to begin shooting in 2020 for Disney+.
After much speculation and plenty of rumors, Disney recently announced an Obi-wan series is in the works for the conglomerate’s soon-to-launch streaming platform, Disney+.
Despite being on a press tour for a movie that has nothing to do with the ever-expanding Star Wars universe, dear Ewan McGregor can’t seem to stop talking about the project (now that he can finally talk about it). In an interview with Men’s Journal, the actor confirmed how brutal it is to be a skeleton in Disney’s closet
“It’s a…massive relief,” McGregor explained. “Because, for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.”
If he’s been lying to us for four years, that means the Obi-Wan project has been in the works at least since the release of The Force Awakens, if not sooner.
According to Comingsoon.net, the project will feature six one-hour episodes. Hossein Amini and Deborah Chow will helm the project, which takes place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith.
In the same interview with Men’s Journal, the actor also discussed the 15 years since he last appeared on screen as the legendary Jedi Knight. “I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him,” he said. “I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that.”
Additionally, McGregor hinted at the trauma that Obi-Wan will be dealing with in the series. After the events of Revenge of the Sith, it makes sense he’d be struggling with everything he’s lost.
“Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III,” the actor said. “It’s quite something to get over.”
Furthermore, McGregor confirmed rumors of the woulda-coulda-shoulda movie in an interview with Comingsoon.net: “It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially. …It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”
In the current media landscape of nonstop content and more choices than ever before, it’s hard to think back to when several standalone Star Wars film projects were pulled from the Disney slate after a less than stellar performance for Solo (an unfairly maligned film, if you ask this writer).
With shooting set to begin in the summer of 2020, we likely won’t get our first taste of the series until 2021 on Disney+. But as long as McGregor keeps doing interviews between now and then, we can hopefully glean new hints about the show.
