4 things we want the Obi-Wan Disney+ series to explore

It’s official: Ewan McGregor will be reprising his Star Wars role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Disney+ miniseries. And there are plenty of storylines to be explored.

Rumors about Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi have been swirling around the internet as of late, but the Disney+ panel at the D23 Expo last night confirmed it: The actor will be returning for a Star Wars miniseries about the Jedi Master, presumably taking place after the events of Revenge of the Sith.

And we have a lot of questions about what happened to Obi-Wan in the years between the two Star Wars trilogies he appears in. With any luck, the new series will delve answer these, exploring how the Obi-Wan we see in Revenge of the Sith becomes the man we meet in A New Hope.

In particular, these are four things we’d love for the miniseries to delve into.

Obi-Wan’s fallout with Anakin

One of the most heartbreaking parts of Revenge of the Sith is when Obi-Wan realizes what Anakin has become. And while we get an entire lightsaber battle sequence between the two of them, the film’s ending doesn’t fully explore the aftermath of their fallout. Obi-Wan considered Anakin his brother, and a loss that huge isn’t without repurcussions. It’s clear that their relationship haunted him even during A New Hope.

If the Obi-Wan miniseries takes place soon after the prequel trilogy, we’d like to see the showrunners dive deeper into Obi-Wan’s losses. Even Jedi Masters have feelings, and Obi-Wan’s are bound to lead him down a somewhat difficult path after all that betrayal.

What happened after the Jedi Order fell

We know that the majority of the Jedi Order was killed following Anakin’s betrayal, but we never truly get to see the aftermath of that devastation. Much of the galaxy depended on the Jedi for protection, and we can’t imagine they took too kindly to the news. On top of that, Obi-Wan and Yoda were forced into hiding — and it couldn’t have been easy to keep their secrets hidden all those years.

Seeing the galaxy react to the fall of the Jedi Order is high on our priority list for this Obi-Wan series. And speaking of getting a glimpse at transitions…

The rise of the rebel forces

During the original Star Wars trilogy, fans are introduced to the depleted rebel forces who fight against the Empire’s authoritarian ways. And the Empire’s beginning are explained in the prequel trilogy, so it makes sense that Obi-Wan’s story would touch on how the original rebel forces were formed — as well as how they became so drained in the end.

We want to see initial reactions to Emperor Palpatine and Vader’s rise to the top, and we want to see the people fight back — and then realize that perhaps they can’t. There are so many interesting politics to be explored in the era between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and this Obi-Wan series could be the perfect lens to look at them through.

How he came to live on Tatooine

Of course, the Obi-Wan from the original trilogy is living on Tatooine under the slightly obvious alias of Ben Kenobi. And we’d love an explanation of how he went from Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan to the one portrayed by Alec Guinness. And also, what did Ben Kenobi do on Tatooine all those years? Clearly he was there to look out for Luke, but… there has to be more to that story, right?
