The CW is moving ahead with a prequel series for The 100
There’s been talk of a spin-off series for The CW’s The 100 for some time now, but it looks like the network is officially moving forward with a prequel.
Hints about a spin-off series for The CW’s science-fiction drama, The 100, have been dropped before, but it looks like the network is making things official. With the show’s final season approaching, it seems like the appropriate time to begin working on other stories set in this world — and a backdoor pilot for a prequel has officially been ordered.
According to Deadline, the prequel series will take place right after the first nuclear apocalypse, chronicling what humanity does to survive it. Fans have already seen flashes of this time period during the show’s most recent season, courtesy of Josephine’s mindspace, and it appears to be a tense time to find yourself in.
Specifically, the new episodes will be set 97 years prior to The 100, and viewers will follow a group of survivors on the ground. Of course, we know that whatever happens during the prequel will eventually lead to life on the Ark or life among the Grounder clans. Could the new series show how these societies were first formed? It would make for an interesting angle on a story we already know the conclusion of.
And for fans worried about the series having a different feel than the original, there’s good news on that count as well: Showrunner Jason Rothenberg will also be taking the reins on this project, meaning that the history and world building are in experienced hands. In addition to Rothenberg, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo will serve as executive producers for the prequel series.
We don’t know much else about the spin-off Justin yet, but if it’s anything like its predecessor, it’s sure to be full of action and emotion. And with things moving forward, we’re bound to get more information soon — even if it’s just more about the plot and timeline.
