The Lizzie McGuire revival will give us some familiar faces — but what about Gordo?
By Meg Dowell
Some of the original cast will reprise their roles in the Lizzie McGuire revival, but other key characters are still just question marks.
A Lizzie McGuire revival is something we didn’t know we needed. And it sounds like it’s being made specifically with its original audience in mind.
We don’t know many details about the show — except the fact that Lizzie is almost 30 (um, same-ish) and is living her dream life in New York. Except it may not be much of a dream at all, and instead just the everyday ups and downs of adulting (definitely same).
How her family back home fits into all this is still unknown. But we do know that, along with Hilary Duff, actors Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas are all officially returning as Jo, Sam, and Matt, Lizzie’s parents and little brother.
The biggest question we have upon hearing this amazing news is: What about Gordo? And Miranda and Kate and the rest of Lizzie’s former classmates?
Based on how many of us are actually still friends with people we knew in middle school (my best friend since fifth grade still FaceTiming me all the way from her Brooklyn apartment is definitely the exception to the rule), it’s highly unlikely we’ll see the familiar faces of Gordo and Miranda.
It’s even less likely we’ll catch even guest appearances from Kate, Ethan, or Larry. (I wonder what he’s doing now?)
Name drops? One hundred percent happening. Especially since the original show’s creator Terri Minsky is returning as the revival’s showrunner and executive producer.
Here’s what I want to know: Will Lizzie’s stint as an Italian pop sensation ever be addressed? Why did she end up in decorating instead of Hollywood? Maybe that’s the big hook. She’ll realize her true dream is to star on Broadway, and the entire show will be about her trying and failing to score a leading role.
OK, I don’t actually want that at all, but with a 13-year-old alter ego still hanging around, anything’s possible, right?
There’s still no word on an official title or release date yet, but you can catch the series exclusively on Disney+ sometime in the (hopefully not too far away) future.
