This week’s Titans episode is all about a new hero and former Cadmus experiment, Kon-El (aka Conner Kent, aka Superboy, portrayed by Joshua Orpin) and his canine companion Krypto.

It isn’t easy being a superhero. When you’re a clone of Superman, who also shares Lex Luther’s genes, the caped crusader charade — or Superman t-shirt charade — gets even more difficult. Stress aside, Conner’s titular Titans episode will start to outline his comic origins.

We last crossed paths with Kon-El and Krypto in the post-credit scene in the Titans season 1 finale. From that short clip, we saw Conner fight and kill a bunch of Cadmus scientists and workers. But honestly, it’s justified considering his comic book past. Beyond that short clip of his silhouette, he is an ominous character on the series. So how will the DC Universe outline Conner in this second season?

In case Conner’s t-shirt wasn’t enough of an indication of which comic runs inspired his namesake episode on DC Universe, Titans executive producer Grey Walker told TV Insider where we can cross reference all our inevitable fan theories:

"“This is the Geoff Johns version of Conner Kent, which is he’s a clone of Lex Luther and of Clark Kent’s Superman. So it’s an essential struggle that in many ways reflects some of the themes from Season 1. His identity struggle is between good and bad, light and dark, and so there’s a challenge that he will have in terms of who is he more of? How does he balance that inherent goodness and a inherent tendency toward terrorism?”"

Walker’s interview remarks paint a troubled hero who battles with his dark side. As we know all too well from Geoff Johns’ Teen Titans (2003) run, defying fate (especially when that destiny is outlined by Lex Luther no less) is a perpetual journey. The 2003 version of the character hurt his fellow Titans all because Lex controlled him.

Lex Luthor weaponizes Conner’s very existence, but there is an inspiring message in Superboy’s plight with good vs. evil. Superboy finds autonomy in being a hero. Despite these obstacles, he continually fights to be a moral hero — making Superboy a unique symbol of hope (even with Clark Kent’s obvious legacy).

According to Warner Bros. Television Division’s synopsis for this week’s Titans episode, we’ll see some other noteworthy Superman-affiliated characters beyond Kon:

"“Conner Kent escapes from Cadmus Labs and emerge into the world for the first time as a free agent. With Krypto in tow, Conner’s search for the truth about his past leads him to Lionel Luthor (guest star PETER MacNEILL), Lex Luthor’s father, and Cadmus geneticist Eve Watson (guest star GENEVIEVE ANGELSON). Eve informs Conner of his true heritage and sends him on a path of self-discovery, examining his own identity and inherent impulses. In a moment of question, Conner chooses to act heroically and finds himself face-to-face with the Titans.”"

From Eve Watson (portrayed by Genevieve Angelson) to Lex’s dad (portrayed by Peter MacNeill, this episode is rich in Superman (and Superboy) lore. With the harrowing narrator behind his characterization, this will be a hectic week for Superboy and his powerful pup.
