14. Annie Wilkes

If you are ready for another terrifying nurse, then have no fear (actually bring all the fear) as we have Annie Wilkes joining the villain party. In Misery, we were introduced to Wilkes, played by Kathy Bates to perfection.

In Misery, Annie Wilkes is supposed to be nursing novelist Paul Sheldon back to health after a car accident left him injured and bedridden. However, thanks to her obsession with him and his work, things definitely take a sinister turn.

We are talking about more than just your typical crazed fan demanding that a beloved character be resurrected. Instead, we are looking at someone who is sworn to do no harm actually being willing to take a sledgehammer to a defenseless man’s ankles as he lays in his hospital bed.

If ever there was a reason to be a little leery of being sick or having to deal with medical professionals, Annie Wilkes and Nurse Ratched would be it, as they are clearly willing to do more harm than good in terms of offering care to their patients.

Wilkes is definitely a villain in so many ways and thanks to Kathy Bates, she is able to turn the helplessness we all feel when it comes to being unwell into a fear that could be downright crippling. (And we aren’t even talking about sledgehammer to the ankles crippling.)
