8. Severus Snape vs. Harry Potter

Book or movie? This is a rivalry that is clear in both the books and the movies.

Brief description of the rivalry: This is one of the biggest rivalries throughout the books. From the very beginning, we felt like there was something Snape was hiding. It would take until the end of the series to get all the answers—and even then, I feel like some stuff was missing.

While Harry had done nothing to Snape, it was the reminder of James that caused the problems. That’s not all that surprising considering the bullying Snape faced. However, something would always stop Snape from completely acting out; Lily.

Did it remain a rivalry? This was a weird sort of rivalry. While there was certainly tension there, it wasn’t clear why Snape took an instant dislike to Harry Potter. It was clear that it wasn’t just because he was the Boy Who Lived, but that he reminded Snape of people.

In a way, the rivalry remained. Yet, in a way, Snape let it go when he made sure Harry got his last tear for the final clues to the riddle.

Why it’s one of the greatest: This rivalry gave us some of the biggest questions throughout Harry Potter. It was clear Snape was hiding something, but it was also clear that he was one of the most honest wizards in the universe. As we learned more about who he was as a child, it was much easier to understand why he disliked Harry so much.

Yet, with the rivalry, we got a mutual understanding between each other. Snape trained Harry when he needed to and he made sure Harry could defeat Voldemort when the time came.
