Harry Potter: 15 greatest rivalries in franchise history
9. Argus Filch vs. Peeves the Poltergeist
Book or movie? This is one of those rivalries that only came up in the Harry Potter books.
Brief description of the rivalry: Peeves the Poltergeist is one of those ghosts of the castle that we’d see mentioned now and then. Filch would routinely try to catch him in the act to get him kicked off the school grounds. The question was what a squib could do up against a ghost.
Did it remain a rivalry? This would be a rivalry for as long as Filch would be a caretaker at the school. After all, there’s no way that the poltergeist would just decide to stop causing trouble. This is Peeves, after all.
Why it’s one of the greatest: You sort of have to feel sorry for Filch when it comes to this situation. Muggles wouldn’t be able to see ghosts, but Filch could because he was a squib—a muggle-born to witch parents. It was never going to be easy for him.
However, Filch’s attitude to the school and life, in general, makes it much harder to feel sorry for him. Especially when you know Peeves just loved to be a pain to everyone in the school. As a ghost, it was no surprise he wanted to just enjoy his afterlife, and this was how to do it.
Like the rivalry between Filch and the Weasley twins in the movies, this rivalry would offer the perfect comedic relief throughout the books.
