Harry Potter: 15 greatest rivalries in franchise history
13. Delores Umbridge vs. Harry Potter
Book or movie? This is a rivalry that shows up in both the books and the movies.
Brief description of the rivalry: Delores Umbridge was introduced in the fifth book as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. She would immediately take a hatred to Harry Potter for seemingly no reason at all. After all, she is one of the vilest characters ever created!
In a way, this isn’t just a rivalry between Harry and Umbridge. She hated every student in the school that didn’t follow her ways.
Did it remain a rivalry? Of course, this rivalry stayed this way. Umbridge had no soul. At least, that’s what it felt like! Both books and movies made it clear that she had no interest in changing the relationship with anyone she crossed. She didn’t even see what she was doing was wrong!
Why it’s one of the greatest: Okay, so this rivalry wasn’t exactly “great.” This was a bully of a teacher against her students. I’ve had teachers who are bullies to their students, taking a disliking to students for what seems like absolutely no reason. However, this one was completely over the top and in a great way.
Harry Potter certainly learned more about patience and acceptance during his time with Umbridge. He learned about playing the system and trying not to let the whole situation get him down. All other students went through the same. Fortunately, her position in the school wouldn’t last forever, even if it did turn into acting headmistress at one point.
