14. Severus Snape vs. James Potter

Book or movie? This rivalry was portrayed in both the Harry Potter books and the movies.

Brief description of the rivalry: James Potter and Severus Snape’s rivalry deserves a mention on its own instead of being included with the other Marauders. The rivalry started at Hogwarts, as James bullied Severus for being different—that was the main reason, anyway. It also didn’t help that Severus loved Lily, who would eventually be with James.

Did it remain a rivalry? Oh yes! This is one of those rivalries that never had a chance to change. James Potter was killed by Voldemort, who was after Harry Potter as a baby. Severus would never forget everything that happened as a student and it would cloud his view of Harry forever.

Why it’s one of the greatest: If it wasn’t for this rivalry, we wouldn’t have had the relationship we did between Snape and Harry Potter. This was one of those rivalries that was a driving force for Snape’s actions and feelings in later life.

In fact, the only thing that made Severus want to help Harry and defeat Voldemort was his love for Lily. That would never disappear.

“Always.”
