Gwendoline Christie’s Gucci dress

Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie was sporting a Gucci dress last night, but it wasn’t the designer label that had viewers so worked up about her choice of attire. Christie’s gown, a long-sleeved mixture of red and cream that was embroidered with beads lining its collar and sleeves, reminded many of two very prominent figures: Jesus and the Pope.

And of course, the most blasphemous corners of the internet were quick to point out the connection. After all, Christie has inspired Game of Thrones fans everywhere with her performance as Brienne of Tarth, an iconic figure who defies society’s expectations for women and forges her own path in spite of it. Given the impact the actress and the character have had on the fanbase, viewers were quick to compare her attire to that of Jesus. And I mean, we aren’t saying we can’t get onboard with our savior Gwendoline Christie (just rolls right off the tongue).

Christie’s gown also gave a subtle nod to the character she played for the majority of the past decade, with its colors and an accessory alluding to House Lannister, a house she shared a major connection with given her relationship with Jaime Lannister. The brooch holding the red draping of her dress at the shoulder is in the shape of a lion, the Lannister sigil, and it also has a sapphire gem in it — an allusion to the sapphires Jaime insists that Tarth is teeming with in order to spare Brienne from the soldiers who take them captive during season three.
