John Favreau teases what to expect from The Mandalorian
The Mandalorian is one of the most ancitipated series heading to Disney’s new streaming platform, but what can we expect from the Star Wars show? Showrunner John Favreau teases a unique perspective.
After this year’s D23 Expo, there’s no doubt that Disney’s new streaming platform is going to be drawing in fans by the dozens. Disney+ has enough content to satisfy just about anyone — and that’s especially true for fans of Marvel and Star Wars.
One of the biggest draws for Star Wars fans is, of course, The Mandalorian. The first long-form series the franchise will have under its belt, The Mandalorian will watch like a Western in space. It follows a lone gunfighter as he navigates the galaxy years after Luke and the others have defeated the Emperor. And the galaxy appears to be wrought with crime following all the political upheaval.
As far as what else to expect from the series, however, most fans don’t actually know. Even after watching the trailer multiple times, many of us have been left with more questions than answers. Thankfully, showrunner Jon Favreau recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to tease what’s in store for viewers come November.
And Favreau jumped right into the lawless element of the series, explaining, “It’s like after the Roman Empire falls, or when you don’t have a centralized shogun in Japan — and, of course, the Old West, when there wasn’t any government in the areas that had not yet been settled.”
With that to consider, it appears that The Mandalorian will delve into the downsides of winning the rebellion. After all, no story of revolution really ends with a victory. Society has to recover from all its been through in order to move forward, and Favreau seems to be implying that viewers will get to see some of that recovery period. It’s a unique perspective, and it certainly offers up a new take on the Star Wars universe.
And the series won’t just be different because of its more political and brutal perspective either. It’s also one of the first additions to the Star Wars franchise that doesn’t focus heavily on the characters we’ve already met. Many have complained that the films have beaten the Skywalker and Jedi narrative to a pulp over the years, and it’s hard to disagree with them.
“I’ve always been curious what the other people in the cantina are up to,” Favreau said. “We’re digging really deep in the toy chest and pulling out the action figures that people were always curious about and were not quite in the center frame, but have a lot of potential.”
We’re always ready to expand our knowledge of the galaxy and those residing in it, and it seems like The Mandalorian will allow viewers to do just that. While Favreau’s comments don’t reveal much more about the plot, they do promise a Star Wars story with a fresh feel to it. And that alone is likely to attract an audience, even if the exciting cast and action isn’t.
