5 questions we have after watching The Mandalorian trailer
Disney released the first trailer for its Disney+ series The Mandalorian, and we have plenty of questions after watching it.
The Disney+ panel at this year’s D23 Expo took place last night, and there were plenty of announcements about the upcoming series that will be available on the platform. And one of the biggest moments of the night occurred when Disney unveiled the first trailer for its Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which will release this November.
Watch the new trailer for The Mandalorian here:
The first look at The Mandalorian promises an intense, Western-inspired story set in the Star Wars universe — and it manages all that with barely any speaking moments. There’s about one line in the entire preview, but the clips tell us a lot about the series’ tone and atmosphere. And truthfully, this looks like it could be the darkest Star Wars story we’ve seen yet.
We know that the series focuses on bounty hunters — specifically, a “lone gunfighter” we can assume will be Pedro Pascal’s lead character — but that’s really all we know about the show so far. The trailer, sadly, left us with more questions than answers.
Here are five questions in particular we’d like answered after watching the new footage.
What’s with the Stormtrooper helmets on pikes?
The trailer opens with an intense shot of bloody Stormtrooper helmets mounted on pikes, and we have to wonder how they got there. We know that Stormtroopers aren’t exactly the most well-liked members of the galaxy, but there appears to be some sort of conflict going on between the bounty hunters and the Stormtroopers throughout The Mandalorian. We get another shot later of the groups pointing guns at one another, apparently at a standstill.
Does all of this have to do with criminal activity, or is there more to this storyline? The Mandalorian is said to take place after the rebels defeat the Empire in The Return of the Jedi, but this shot tells us one thing for sure: There are definitely still tensions throughout the galaxy. Will The Mandalorian take a deep dive into those politics?
Who are the scared civilians we see throughout the trailer?
Although the majority of the trailer focuses on characters who are wrapped up in the criminal underground of the Star Wars universe, we do get a few shots of scared-looking civilians as well. The first of these shows what appears to be a mother and her child standing waist-deep in water. The woman is shielding her child from whatever’s after them — and someone or something definitely seems to be after them.
We also get another glimpse of a town that seems to be under attack. Someone is carrying a young child, and the kid is squeezing his eyes shut. Are these victims of the Empire’s attempts to regain control, or have they gotten wrapped up in the bounty-hunting world somehow? Or are they simply supposed to represent the disorder that comes after overthrowing an Empire?
What is Giancarlo Esposito’s role in the series?
Fans of Breaking Bad will recognize Giancarlo Esposito, the actor who portrayed Gus Fring in the AMC drama. The trailer doesn’t reveal much about his character in The Mandalorian, but it looks like he’ll be just as formidable in this role as he was in his Breaking Bad one.
The clip we do get of Esposito shows him in a standoff with someone who appears to be a Mandalorian. Esposito’s character doesn’t look like he’s backing down, though, and that attitude alone suggests he’ll be a high-ranking character — and since he’s standing in front of some sort of Troopers, it looks like he’ll be on the Imperial side. (We cannot wait to see him play another antagonist.)
Is that a whole room of people frozen in carbonite?
Star Wars fans were made familiar with the act of freezing people in carbonite through Han Solo’s experience in The Empire Strikes Back, and it looks like Jabba the Hutt isn’t the only criminal who freezes those who don’t pay their debts to him. The Mandalorian trailer gives us a quick shot of an entire room of people frozen in carbonite, just like Han.
We don’t know much else about this moment, but whoever is running that operation is surely someone to be afraid of.
Where is Pedro Pascal?
Anyone hoping to get a glimpse of Pedro Pascal without his suit — or even hear him speak — might be a bit disappointed with the first trailer for The Mandalorian. I mean, we know Pascal is behind the mask we see throughout the trailer, but… we would have liked a little more insight into what he’s up to in this series. Better luck next trailer, we suppose.
