Aquaman 2 might be delayed, but it’s for a good reason

Jason Momoa revealed that Aquaman 2 could be delayed because he’s busy defending a cause he believes in — and hey, we respect that.

Fans of the DC Extended Universe have been patiently awaiting sequels to both Wonder Woman and Aquaman, and it looks like it may be a while before we see the latter even begin production. While Aquaman 2 was scheduled to start filming next year, Jason Momoa recently revealed that the movie could be delayed due to the Hawaiian protests he’s been actively involved in.

“Sorry Warner Bros we can’t shoot Aquaman 2,” the actor wrote in an Instagram post yesterday. “Because Jason got run over by a bulldozer trying to stop the desecration of his native land THIS iS NOT HAPPENING. WE ARE NOT LETTING YOU DO THIS ANYMORE. Enough is enough. Go somewhere else.”

Momoa goes on to discuss what he’s actually protesting, which is the planned construction on Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano with a summit that is considered sacred by the Hawaiian people. A “Thirty Meter Telescope” (TMT) is planned for the area. And while we’re all for scientists constructing new ways to learn about the world, does it need to be on someone else’s sacred land?

Momoa has been present at many of the protests, which began around the same time as the telescope’s construction back in 2014. His passion makes sense given his own Hawaiian ancestry, but he’s not the only celebrity who has spoken up against the construction. Dwayne Johnson has joined in on the protests there, and musicians Jack Johnson and Damian Marley have also shown their support.

Warner Bros. has yet to comment on Momoa’s statements, and with a release date slated for 2022, it’s unclear whether this will actually affect the Aquaman sequel at all. Still, Momoa certainly knows how to get attention for his cause — and we really do hope it works.
