The Boys is an obscure story about superpowerful characters, but violent chaos and comic-book-accurate portrayals make it a must-watch Amazon Prime series.
If you haven’t already bingedThe Boys, your list of television shows to watch is about to get even longer. Superhero media is becoming even more expansive, with various extended universes and even entire streaming platforms dedicated to the masked characters (hello, DC Universe).
However, Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys is a rebellious anti-supes response to everything idealistic and wholesome about superheroes. Whether you truly hate superheroes, you have the James Cameron et al. approach to superhero media, or you’re just looking for a comic-book-related outlet for your latent grudge against DC Comics for what they did to Dick Grayson, The Boys is the perfect show for you.
Even if you’re a die-hard superhero fanatic, you can find some entertainment in a series satirizing them to make some sociopolitical commentary. The bloody mayhem and underdog themes are just added bonuses. As the first few episodes build the main characters and the conflict, the series relies on comic book accuracy.
According to the official series synopsis, it’s a bit more complicated than a simple underdog story, though:
"“THE BOYS is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and their formidable Vought backing.”"
Following an ordinary person, Hughie, after a Supe kills his girlfriend, the Amazon series sets up a personal vendetta against heroes from the first episode. Granted, we’re using the terms “superhero” and “hero” lightly because there are few altruistic ones on the show.
Of course, the series embarks on a standard hero assemble montage from there. Just… the heroes, in this case, are ordinary people who are galavanting around, capturing and killing extraordinary people that the public idolizes.
It’s tough being the underdog in this story, especially since the odds are stacked against the ordinary Supes-hating-heroes in the series. The Amazon Prime adaptation doesn’t stray far from Garth Ennis’ titular comic. While some onscreen characters, such as Terror, only appear in flashbacks in this first season, the show fulfills our comic-accuracy cravings.
Even with its comic homage, you don’t necessarily need to read the source material to follow the show — though it is a nice bonus.
