Amazon’s The Boys shows that even superheroes can have a dark side
Being a superhero isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, and Amazon Prime’s new series, The Boys, takes a look at the struggles that come with being a hero.
The Boys is taking society’s idea of superheroes and turning it on its head. With an all-star cast including Karl Urban, Chace Crawford, Jack Quaid, and more, the show examines fame and what can happen when the heroes we idolize only do their jobs for money and endorsement deals.
We live in a world filled with superheroes. We’re obsessed with the boys of the Avengers, we love a good Wonder Woman movie, but through all of that, we only see the good in our heroes. The Boys is taking it one step further and showing us what can happen when fame gets in the way. With Karl Urban as Billy Butcher and Jack Quaid as Hughie Campbell, the two have to bring together “the boys” in order to expose what these heroes are really like.
Watch the official trailer for The Boys here:
Set around Hughie’s girlfriend and her death at the hands of A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), Hughie and Butcher get their group of vigilantes together to take out those who abuse the idea of fame and fortune over what it means to truly be a superhero.
Maybe it’s because the world itself is filled with those that abuse their status, but there is something aboutThe Boys that reminds us that we can’t lose sight of our values when confronted with such things as fame and money. These heroes, though once good, now only care about drugs, sleeping with people, and eliminating anything that will stop them from being heroes in the public eye.
So, sure, these vigilantes are basically the kind of heroes we love to see in our movies and television shows, but they are there to stop the heroes (or villains more like it) from besmirching the idea of a superhero.
The Boys is set to premiere on Amazon on July 26, and it is going to be a wild ride.
