The first full-length trailer for Star Trek: Picard debuted at Comic-Con, and it dropped some pretty major bombs. But even with fan favorites returning and new characters bringing entrigue, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Star Trek’s newest series.

It’s finally here: We got our first taste of Star Trek: Picard in the form of a trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, and needless to say, we are not disappointed. While we got a better sense of the tone of the series, as well as a more in-depth look into the new characters, there are also some huge surprises that we didn’t see coming — namely, the return of two very well-known characters from earlier Star Trek shows.

There are plenty of shocking moments in there, wouldn’t you say? So brew yourself a cup of earl grey (hot), and sit back as we recount the five major questions we have about the Star Trek: Picard trailer.

Holy $#!% — Is that Data?

It didn’t take long for the trailer to drop the first of many major bombshells. Brent Spiner is officially back in the Star Trek universe! The actor, who was last seen as the ill-fated Data in Star Trek: Nemesis deliberately left the role because he felt that he looked too old to play the part, but it appears that he may have had a change of heart.

We’re already trying to figure out exactly which android Spiner will be playing, as it’s not 100 percent confirmed that the android we see speaking to Picard is actually Data himself. It could be his successor, B-4, or even his shady twin brother, Lore. Regardless of which android Spiner is playing, however, we’re just happy to see him back in the face paint and contacts again.

Who is the young woman who came to Picard?

One of the most prominent characters in the trailer is an unnamed young woman who seeks out Picard for help. She tells him, “Everything inside of me says that I’m safe with you.” Come on. That’s pretty vague.

The actress, Isa Briones, is new to the StarTrek universe, so it would be logical to assume that she will be playing a new character — but we aren’t 100 percent sold on that idea. There’s already fan buzz that, like Spiner, she could be playing a character who met her (apparent) doom on Star Trek: The Next Generation:Data’s android daughter, Lal.

She certainly has the haircut for it, and if Picard isn’t afraid of bringing back older characters, it could make sense for Lal to be a part of the show.

What kind of role will the Borg have?

Another big surprise was the presence of both the Borg cube and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. In both the movies and the shows, Captain Picard had a long and troubled history involving the Borg, and it was the final confrontation with them that led to the death of countless crew members of the Enterprise, including Commander Data.

Picard‘s showrunners have already spoken at length about how the series will follow an older, more haunted Picard, but just how the Borg fits into the plotline of the show, we’re not quite sure.

Will we see any more non-TNG characters?

One of the many big surprises in the trailer was the presence of Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, the former Borg drone who allied herself with Starfleet. However, the surprise wasn’t that the actress stepped back into the role — it was that Seven was a character on Star Trek: Voyager, not Star Trek: The Next Generation. Granted, characters have crossed over before (see Dr. Bashir on TNG), but Ryan’s presence indicates that, when it comes to returnees, there’s no limit on what series they come from.

Where’s the dog?

All the animal lovers out there may have noticed a significant lack of animal sidekicks in the Picard trailer. Fans were first introduced to Picard’s pooch, Number One, in a promo poster, but he (sadly) didn’t make an appearance in the trailer.

Also absent was Picard’s original “Number One,” Commander Will Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes. Frakes, who has directed multiple episodes of Discovery, announced that he would be directing some for Picard as well, so it’s not completely out of the question that Riker might make an appearance as well.
