More casting news might be on the horizon for Disney’s live-action Little Mermaid
Disney’s live-action reboot of The Little Mermaid has already cast its lead actress and its villain, but it looks like more casting news might be on the horizon.
Disney has been pumping out live-action reboots of its classic animated films like there’s no tomorrow, with Aladdin and The Lion King both hitting theaters this year. One of the next films being rebooted is The Little Mermaid, and fans have already gotten exciting casting news in the form of Halle Bailey playing Ariel. Melissa McCarthy has also been added to the film as Ursula, the evil sea witch who steals Ariel’s voice.
But while The Little Mermaid‘s leading lady and villain have been decided on, there are plenty of roles currently still up in the air. It looks like we might be getting more casting news soon, though, with the filmmakers deciding who will play Prince Eric and King Triton.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, singer-songwriter Harry Styles is currently in early negotiations to take on the role of Eric. He’s certainly got the looks to play Ariel’s dreamy love interest, but it’s also noteworthy that Styles has built a career in music. Prince Eric doesn’t have many singing moments in the original film, but with a talent like Styles onhand, fans might be in for some new songs.
Deadline also reported that Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton, Ariel’s father and the ruler of Atlantica. The rest of Ariel’s family has yet to be cast yet, though Triton arguably plays the most important role, with his strict rules being the catalyst for Ariel’s desire to run off to the human world (well, in addition to Prince Eric).
Other roles that have already been filled are Flounder, who is being played by Jacob Tremblay, and Scuttle, who will be taken on by Awkwafina. We’ve yet to hear about the grumpy crab, Sebastian, but we can assume he’ll be cast after Eric and Triton.
With Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall at its helm, the remake of The Little Mermaid is bound to be a success. Hopefully, as casting continues, fans will get more news about the film — along with a better idea of when it will be released.
