Endgame set clip shows how Iron Man, Doctor Strange’s reunion came together

A new set video from Avengers: Endgame shows Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch planning an important scene for Iron Man and Doctor Strange.
For the last year, we’ve heard stories of Joe and Anthony Russo’s secretive directing style for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — but we haven’t really gotten to see what it’s like with them on set.
In a new video shared to Instagram featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch, we finally get to see how filming such a complicated movie with the Russos happens.
In the clip, the Russos give Cumberbatch a refresher on Doctor Strange’s “this is the only way” scene from Infinity War to prep for Iron Man and Doctor Strange’s reunion. At one point, you can see Anthony Russo holding up a script — which, it’s surprising that they get to see some form of a script at all, considering the Russos were known for giving actors fake and incomplete scripts for the movies.
As ScreenRant mentions, you may be surprised to hear a certain line uttered by Iron Man at the end of the clip. Doctor Strange says he can’t tell Iron Man if they’re in winning scenario and in response, Tony says in frustration, “Welcome back, a–hole.”
The next clip in the Instagram post shows Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch filming the scene on a large greenscreen set. During the filming, Downey says the closing line again. Unfortunately, at some point, the decision must have been made to take the line out of the final cut of the movie. It’s totally in character for Tony Stark, but at least we don’t lose much with the line cut out of the movie.
We’ll hopefully get more behind-the-scenes footage like this when Avengers: Endgame is out on home release. On top of the gag reel (which we really can’t wait to see), this film should be absolutely stuffed with extras commemorating the original six Avengers as well as the entire Infinity Saga. The Infinity War home release did have some good behind-the-scenes extras. But with the movie having a cliffhanger, the Russos couldn’t reveal everything about the movie-making process at the time.
Avengers: Endgame’s Blu-ray and 4K home release will be out in August.
